My Grandmother Used To Make These
When I was growing up, I never realized the importance of holiday traditions. Later, when I became a mother and began my own family, I discovered the meaningfulness of these rituals and wanted to create the exact, same traditions for my own children as my parents did for me.
As Roman Catholics, all of our foods were associated with church events and holidays. During lent no meat was to be eaten on Fridays. Thus, we created vegetarian choices. Our Easter breads with egg on top were made on Good Friday and could not be eaten until Easter Sunday.
Then there was the Bacala (codfish) that we ate on Christmas Eve. It had a horrible smell. Today, my children and nieces walk into my parents home on Christmas Eve and make all sorts of comments on the smelly delicious fish.
For the feast of Saint Anthony we prepared sweet buns. For the feast of San Guiseppe there were zippoli. During all holidays and baptisms there were always pizzelle , crotelli, genetti.etc.
For my generation the holidays were honored more for their religious meanings and were celebrated with specially prepared foods. We hardly received any gifts so these traditions were very important to us. I realized this importance after I married and moved far away from my parents home. It wasn't just the holiday that was important but it was also the fuss made at getting these fancy foods and fritters ready for the holiday occasions. It was then that I really missed my parents and thank God that now they live so close by.
I hope that anyone who remembers any food traditions and never had a chance to get a recipe from a special grandmother will find in a book, their favourite creations.
Let the Italian traditions live on!!!
